Mercury Column

A slender mirror-polished stainless-steel column whose surface ripples like liquid mercury. The form is minimal and upright, yet animated by flowing distortions that turn the vertical shaft into a shimmering line of motion.

Artist Statement

Mercury Column distills the essence of reflective sculpture into a single, concentrated vertical form. Rising 1200 mm from a compact 180 × 180 mm base, the column maintains a strict geometric outline while its surface behaves like a dynamic fluid. The mirror-polished stainless steel bends light into wave patterns that shift as the viewer moves, evoking the metallic viscosity of mercury in motion.

The work embraces contrast: architectural precision framed around a skin that appears unstable and alive. Reflection becomes the true medium—colors, bodies, and surroundings dissolve into fragments that slide along the height of the sculpture, creating a continuous ribbon of changing imagery.

Despite its modest footprint, Mercury Column commands presence. It acts as a vertical lens, drawing the environment into itself and transforming stillness into fluidity through its rippled geometry. The piece encourages slow orbiting, revealing new distortions from each angle.

1/1 Installation & Placement

Designed for 360° viewing. Provide a minimum of 0.5–1 m clearance so the reflective distortions can be fully experienced. Works beautifully under soft, even lighting around 3000–4000 K, which enhances the vertical flow of reflections.

1/2 Columns & Totemic Forms

Suited for galleries, reception areas, and private interiors where a refined, upright sculptural presence can anchor the space. Pairs naturally with other wave-surfaced stainless works.
