Sentinel

Brushed stainless steel column with mirror polished strip 340x340x2900mm

Artist Statement

Sentinel is a mirror-polished stainless-steel sculpture that treats light as a living material. The surface behaves like liquid mercury—absorbing the room, the viewer and the horizon into a single shifting image. Rather than depicting space, the work composes with it: reflections stretch, compress and fold as you move, so the piece is never seen the same way twice.

The form carries a quiet vertical presence—part totem, part instrument for looking. In a white-cube gallery it reads as a line of light; outdoors it draws the sky down to ground level. Close up, micro-ripples in the steel scatter highlights into a fine grain; at distance, the object simplifies into a bold, architectural silhouette.

1/1 Modern Exhibition

Curated for modern exhibition contexts, Sentinel performs best with soft, directional lighting that allows gradients to travel across the surface. A generous viewing radius (2–5 m) encourages the audience to orbit the piece and see the reflections recombine. Neutral walls and low-saturation surroundings keep the palette clean and emphasize the “Mercury Effect”.

If installed as a focal point, place it slightly off-axis from the main approach so the first encounter happens at a glancing angle—this activates the long specular highlights. For multi-work displays, maintain clear negative space around the sculpture; it will visually “borrow” neighboring works in reflection.
